Written Examination

• The entrance examination for firefighters will be 100% written.
• The applicant must pass the written examination to be considered for further steps in the process.
• We do not provide study guides. Search online to find Civil Service study guides.

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

• Candidates must pass the CPAT conducted by the Amarillo Fire Department. Applicants who successfully pass the written examination will immediately attend CPAT Orientation.

The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) is used to test the fitness of candidates for hire as Amarillo firefighters.

• CPAT Orientation: The days scheduled as ORIENTATION are intended as an opportunity for candidates to become familiar with CPAT tasks and apparatus.
• CPAT Practice: The days scheduled as PRACTICE are intended to allow candidates an opportunity to complete a timed practice run using actual CPAT apparatus and complete the entire course. To take the test, you will be required sign a waiver acknowledging that the ORIENTATION/PRACTICE sessions were made available to you.
• CPAT Test: The day scheduled as TEST is a test day only. There will be no opportunity for practice and/or orientation. You will be required to watch a short video outlining the test.

• Eligible candidates must be at least eighteen (18) years of age to test, but not more than 36 years of age on the date of hire. Must pass firefighter entrant’s physical, Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT), aerial ladder climb, oral interview(s), background investigation, and criminal history check.
• No felonies
• In accordance with the Texas Local Government Code Chapter 143; an additional five points shall be added to the examination grade of an applicant who served in the United States armed forces, received an honorable discharge, and made a passing grade on the examination. The Candidate is responsible for providing a copy of their DD Form 214 to the City of Amarillo Human Resources Office, 601 S Buchanan, Amarillo TX, room 101 prior to the examination deadline. No forms will be accepted after the noted examination deadline.
